Falling

Falling is the song Jungkook chooses to sing for Shelby at Riviera 31. Its lyrics of absence, regret, and falling again give the performance an intimate emotional charge: Shelby recognizes why he has chosen it, and the song becomes a way for him to express feeling that he does not initially put into words.

Performance at Riviera 31

After about an hour of music, Riviera 31 grows warmer and more convivial. Shelby is talking and laughing with a new couple while Jungkook keeps a hand on her thigh. When he gets up and makes his way through the crowd, she notices the warmth of his hand is gone and turns to see him speaking with the pianist. The festive music gives way to the piano-led melody of Falling, a song by Harry Styles, whom Shelby had not known Jungkook appreciated.

Jungkook takes the microphone and sings facing the room. The lyrics include the image of being in bed without the person he longs for, and the suggestion that drink and wandering hands are to blame. Later, the song asks what it would mean to become someone the other person no longer talks about, before returning to the refrain of falling again. Shelby understands why Jungkook is singing it; the performance surprises her, but its words do not feel incidental to their relationship.

Shelby's response

The song's meaning reaches Shelby before the performance ends. She feels a shiver at the unexpected discovery that Jungkook likes Harry Styles, and the intensity of his voice and the lyrics brings tears to her eyes without making them fall. The narration presents her attention as absorbed by both the sound and the emotion Jungkook conveys: the performance holds her in place while she recognizes its personal significance.

When Jungkook finishes, the lounge answers with applause. Shelby runs to the stage and embraces him, then kisses him as the crowd cheers. They separate to look at one another; Jungkook strokes her back, and Shelby wipes away his tears before he does the same for her. The gesture turns the song's vulnerable address into a physical exchange of care rather than a one-sided serenade.

From song to declaration

Jungkook leaves the stage with Shelby, draws her close, and rests his forehead against hers as the softer festive music resumes. They dance together, Shelby looking into his eyes. He tells her she is the best thing that has happened to him and says that he loves her. The scene thus moves from lyrics about absence and the fear of being forgotten to a direct affirmation of their bond, followed by Shelby's embrace and kiss.

Touch, distress, and reassurance

The performance gains context from earlier scenes in which touch meets Shelby in very different ways. During a panic episode, Cassiopée's hands on her shoulders make Shelby recoil and cry out in pain; she remains curled up and clearly refuses further contact. At the boxing venue's locker room, Jungkook finds her trembling and crying in the shower. Unsure how to help, he turns off the water and stays beside her until she calms. In another scene, after Shelby breaks down while looking at her injuries, Jungkook kneels and places a hand on her knee as she seeks comfort.

A later panic attack shows a more active form of reassurance: Madison realizes Shelby believes she is in danger, leaves to find Jungkook, and tells him what is happening. He runs to Shelby; she recognizes him, puts her arms around his neck, and presses her face against his shoulder while he strokes her back and speaks softly until her breathing returns to normal. Against these contrasting moments, Falling belongs to a relationship in which physical closeness is not automatically safe or welcome; the scene's embrace matters because Shelby runs to Jungkook and reciprocates his affection. The song's romantic force rests not only on what he sings, but on the care and mutual response that follow.
